Term 2

This term:

In Literacy:

We are looking at the book ‘I Like Trains by Daisy Hirst’. We will also be writing our own letters to Santa which we will get to post in the local postbox.

This term we will continue to follow the Sounds Write phonics programme and learn new phonemes each fortnight. We will also continue to blend and segment these sounds to read and write words. The children will really benefit from practising this skill at home by completing the fortnightly homework activity and regular reading. Weekly, the children will be provided with opportunities for free and structured writing. The initial stage with writing will be to develop the confidence to put marks on the paper which the children give meaning to - this is known as emergent writing.

In Mathematics:

We will start this term by continuing to look at spatial reasoning, reminding ourselves of the 2D shapes learnt last term and extending our learning by looking at 3D shapes. We will then move on to explore the composition of the numbers 1 to 5. We will be encouraging the children to subitise numbers to 5; recognising amounts of objects without counting. We will also be connecting quantities and numbers to finger patterns and explore different ways of representing numbers on our fingers.

Our Christmas Nativity Play

We will be working hard on our wonderful Nativity show which will be performed on 10th and 12th December. The show is called ‘The Nativity’. Everyone will be involved in the performance. The majority of costumes we provide for the children so there is no need to worry about getting one. If we require you to provide anything we will let you know in plenty of time.

Look what we've been up to in Owls Class

Week 1 -

It has been lovely to have the children back this week, we think they have all enjoyed exploring our new areas of the classroom. At the start of the week, we launched our topic by going on a superhero hunt around the school. In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘Supertato by Sue Hendra & Paul Linnet’, we have used adjectives to describe him as well as Evil Pea. We have also written a list of vegetables from the story. In Maths, we have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties. In Understanding the world, we learnt about Bonfire night and why we celebrate it.

Week 2 -

Owls have begun to look at a new book in Literacy this week all about trains. They have created some amazing train tracks to link with the character in the story. In maths we have been further exploring 3D shapes. The class made an incredible obstacle course using 3D shapes found in the Play Pod – amazing teamwork. We have talked about Anti-bullying Week and have read the story of Elmer and how he is different to the herd and very kind and funny! We are super proud of our Owls for the way they conducted themselves during the 2-minute silence on Remembrance Day. The class have decorated the window with some beautiful tissue paper poppies to mark the occasion

Week 3 -

This week in Owls we have completed lots of work for Understanding the World; we had a paramedic and a PSCO in to talk to us. We were very excited to be able to go inside the ambulance and see the police car. We were very impressed with the questions they wanted to find out. In Literacy, we have continued to talk about the character of small dog in our story ‘I like Trains’. We have also started our rehearsals for our Nativity, we have learnt lots of songs and have been on the stage saying our lines nice and loud.

Week 4 -

This week in Owls class it has been all about practising for our Nativity play, which is only 2 weeks away! In Literacy, we have been writing our letters to Santa, all ready for posting next Wednesday. We are impressed with the independence the children have shown when writing. In Maths, we have been recapping the numbers 1, 2 and 3 and learning all about 4 and how it makes a square shape. In PSHE, we spoke about how to stay safe online, we watched a video and then read a story about Smartie the Penguin who taught us what to do when playing games or watching videos on line.

Week 5 -

We have had such a busy week here in Owls Class! Our rehearsals for the nativity are well under way and we couldn’t be prouder of the children and how they have taken to their roles, learned their lines and the songs. We are so excited to share it with you all. In Maths we have been subitising 5 and we have learned the three golden rules of counting with the Number blocks. We have shared lots of Christmas stories and most importantly, we have written and sent our letters to Santa. The children walked to the post box on Wednesday. Thank you to our parent helpers. We hope the letters arrive safely.

Week 6 -

This week in Owls class it has been all about our Nativity performances. We are so proud of each and every child on how well they have done. They sang loud and clear and were confident and loud when saying their lines. We hope you thoroughly enjoyed it! All photos are up on Class Dojo and you should have also received a laminated photo of your child. In Literacy, we wrote a class version of ‘Wheels on the Bus’ but called ‘Wheels on the Train’ to link to our learning about the book ‘I like Trains by Daisy Hirst’. In Maths, we have been subitising 5 as 4 and 1 more.
