In Literacy 

We are looking at the books:

• Rainbow Fish
• The Snail and the Whale
• Bright Stanley - double trouble
• Sharing a shell
• What the ladybird heard at the seaside
• The lighthouse keepers lunch
• The pirate next door

This term, we are going to be looking at a range of stories including ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and ‘The Snail and the Whale’. We will be encouraging the children to be independent when writing in the provision. This term we will be focusing on non-fiction. We will learn about the features of a non-fiction book and use them to find out about lots of different sea creatures. We are going to create our own fact files.

In Sounds-Write the children will be continue to consolidate learning to blend, segment and sound manipulate words with the VCC (e.g ant),  CVCC (e.g. pond), CCVC (e.g drum), CCVCC (e.g. shrimp) and CCCVC (e.g. strap) format. The children will be learning the final 2 sounds ‘ng’ and ‘qu’. They will also be learning the approach same sound different spelling such as w, wh, u. They all make the same sound of ‘woo’ but have a different spelling.  

In Mathematics

This term we are revisiting some skills we have learnt this year. We will revisit comparison, counting, number patterns and number facts. We will compare groups of objects and decide which has more and which has less. We will revisit those important skills in counting carefully and continue to find the pairs of numbers that total 5. This is something you could work on at home with your child. You can use your fingers or practical objects to find all the different ways of making 5. When this is secure you could move up to 10. For example, you say ‘if I have 3 (show 3 fingers) how many more do you need to make 5? Encourage your child to hold up 2 fingers. Then say the sentence ‘3 and 2 makes 5 altogether’. You can repeat this until you have found all the ways of making 5 and then move on the making 10.

Look what we've been up to in Owls - 

Week 1 - 

This week has been a very exciting week for Owls class as we went on our trip to Bath City Farm. We did a range of activities, such as newspaper pot making, playing in the mud kitchen and bug hunting. We also got to feed chickens, alpacas and see lots of other animals on the farm. We even got to play in the farm park, which included slides, tyre swings and a giant sandpit. We are very proud of all the children for showing all the Paxcroft Values whilst at the farm. All photos will be uploaded to Class Dojo, if you want to see the fun we had!

Week 2 - 

This week, Owls have been very resilient as they have had a range of different adults again. It was so lovely to see them on Friday and have such a big hug, it felt like I was a bit of a celebrity! In PE, this week we had practise on 4 different activities for sports day. We have some very fast hurdlers. In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Ladybird who heard on holiday’ and learning about rhyme. In Maths, we have been recapping numbers to 10, we had great fun playing the game, hit the button, and maybe you could practise at home! In PSHE we read the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ and spoke all about sharing and prized possessions.

Week 3 - 

This week in Owls we have been reading the story The Rainbow Fish. We started the week by collaging our own rainbow fish, which we then used in Literacy to write a sentence to describe using adjectives. In Maths, we have been learning to count beyond 20. I was very impressed with the children who could already use their subitising knowledge to count large amounts of objects. Our main event of the week was our sports day, which I believe all the children enjoyed! 

Week 4 - 

This week in Literacy, we have been learning all about Sharks! We have been looking at Non-Fiction texts to help us find out the information. We then wrote our own fact files on a shark. In Maths, we have been learning to recognise and name 3D shapes. We have also continued with our seaside-themed learning by making bubble painted pictures as a sea background for our hand printed fishes. In PSHE, we have been reading the text ‘Bright Stanley Double Trouble’ and we talked about the importance of not following others' behaviours.
