Foundation Subjects
This term we are covering the subjects; Science, History, Geography, Art, Religious Education (RE), Music, PE, PSHE and Computing.
In Geography, we will be asking the question ‘What is a seaside?’ We will compare and contrasting different beaches. Using maps, we will identify different beaches around the UK.
In History, we will compare beaches and piers in the Victorian times with now.
In Science, we will find out about ‘Living things and their Habitats’.
In Art, we will be focusing on making sculptures out of paper.
In RE, we are looking at the question ‘The beginning of the world: what can we learn from special Christian and Jewish stories?’
In Music, we are looking at exploring sounds and performance through the topics of ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Travel’.
In Computing, we are focusing on ‘Digital Music’ and this will involve making rhythms and tunes using digital tools.
In Physical Education (PE), we are looking at bat and ball skills used in the game of cricket and using ‘Jasmine PE’ we will investigate the ‘Physical’ skill element and focus on sending and receiving skills and the reaction/response skill within a game.
In PSHE, our work will be based around the topic ‘Relationships’.
Week 1
We have had a busy start to this term and have enjoyed making 3D Paper Sculptures in a ‘Tube Towers Challenge’ in Art, inspired by Samantha Stephenson. In English, we have enjoyed reading 'Superworm' by Julia Donaldson, have been learning about the features of instructions and have explored instructions on how to look after a worm! We wonder if any of the children will decide to create a wormery at home now? In Maths, we have looked at multiplication and have been making arrays. In Storytime, we have started listening to the story of 'James and the Giant Peach' by Roald Dahl. We can't wait to find out what is going to happen next!
Week 2
This week in Nightingale we have been extremely fortunate to have a 'Stay Safe Initiative Workshop' and we have learned how to become a 'digital hero’. During the workshop, the children reflected on how to be kind, keep safe online and how to ask for help, whilst also understanding what games and apps are appropriate for their age. We wonder if the children can show you their superhero pose and share the key information from the workshop with you? In music this week, the children have been learning how to keep a steady beat whilst exploring the dynamics, pitch and tempo of a music piece, inspired by different modes of transport.
Week 3
This week in Nightingale we have kick-started our new Geography topic ‘The Seaside’, with a Seaside experience down by the pirate ship. We had a wonderful time playing in the sand, splashing in the water and role playing sailing on a boat on the sea. Fortunately, the sunshine came out to help us fully immerse ourselves in this opportunity. On Friday, we learned about the Coronation and designed our own crown for King Charles III.
Week 4
This week, we have continued to explore seaside related texts in Guided Reading and have discussed what we already know about the seaside. We have used our own experiences to share our knowledge with each other. We also had a picnic with the rest of the school to celebrate the King's Coronation. In English, we started our learning about recounts.
Week 5
This week in Nightingale, we have started to look at our new Science Unit 'Living Things and their Habitats'. The children have been learning all about what makes something Living, Dead or Never been Alive. We wonder if they can tell you all about this? We have continued to deepen our geographical knowledge about physical and human features specific to the seaside. On Friday, we walked to the park for a picnic, looking out for human and physical geographical features as we went. It has also been Mental Health Week and we talked about our anxieties and ways we could stop our worries taking over. We have had a busy, yet very informative week and have enjoyed some extra time playing in the sunshine!
Week 6
In Year 1/2 this week we have been writing our recounts following our amazing trip to the park on Friday. We have tried our best to remember all of the features that we need to showcase our best learning. In Science, we have been continuing to explore living things and their habitats, by taking our learning outside of the classroom to investigate different habitats and the living things that might live in these. We made the most of the weather by designing and creating our very own class microhabitats!
